Stewart Continuing to Grow
With the season well underway now for high schools across the country, there are already plenty of storylines to follow in regards to the future of the Texas A&M football team. One player fans have paid close attention to is 2013 St. Pius X signal caller Kohl Stewart who gave his verbal commitment to the Aggies just six weeks ago. Stewart is one of four commits that the Aggies have locked up for the 2013 class and he and his teammates were in action against Sealy over the weekend. They came up short in a close game but the loss already seemed to be behind him after the game.
"Well, I think we responded from last week for sure," said Stewart of his team's 33-25 loss to Sealy following a zero week blowout loss to Trinity Christian Academy. "We are running a complicated defense and our defense is getting it figured out so this is something we are going to build on. We have to look forward to next week and move on."
Despite having some success in the passing attack against Sealy, St. Pius was felled by drops throughout the game, yet another point that Stewart says they can not dwell on.
"I trust every guy when I throw them the ball," said the junior quarterback. "The ball was a little wet tonight and that's out of their control. You can always look back on games and dwell on it but we aren't going to do that we are going to move on. We are fine."
With still quite some time before Stewart steps foot onto Kyle Field as a member of the Aggies, there is still time for growth in his game. His focus this year is to take the reigns of the team from a leadership standpoint.
"I want to work on being more of a leader," he said. "I want to be a leader for the team and also lead the offense by staying positive. We need to eventually start to close these games. Tonight that was my fault I didn't see Ricky (Seals-Jones) drop back there. (Seals-Jones intercepted a Stewart pass deep in Sealy territory to close out St. Pius's hope for a victory)
One way for Stewart to get away from some of the difficulties he and his team has faced early in the season was his trip to College Station to see his future team open their season Sunday night against SMU (a 46-14 A&M win).
"I am looking forward to meeting some more of these guys," he said of other commits that will be on hand. "The 2012 class is pretty good, everybody knows that, and the 2013 class is looking like it is going to shape up pretty well so I am looking forward to getting to know some more of these guys and also getting a chance to watch A&M at Kyle Field that is going to be great."
Stewart wound up enjoying the trip even more than he thought he would.
"It was an awesome atmosphere there at Kyle Field last night" he said. "There were a lot of good recruits up there and good players. It was really fun to get to watch them and it was a great experience for me."
St. Pius takes the field again Friday to take on Episcopal High School where Stewart and his teammates will look to get their first win of the season. Stewart is 34 of 78 fir 563 yards this season with four touchdowns.
