Capogna's Corner: Refocused for UConn
That was a rough one to watch. You have to give Rutgers credit; they played their hearts out. But we know it's a game we had chances to win. I've heard a lot about bad calls by the refs and all that, but that's just an excuse. You can't worry about that. The bottom line is Rutgers gave us three fumbles - two on punt returns and the one late by Ray Rice - and we only got three points out of it. We didn't capitalize.
I'll tell you what, it sure was hard to look the defense in the eyes after that one. They got all those fourth-quarter stops and we did nothing to make them count. It hurt watching Rutgers celebrate afterwards, but it sure shows you how far this program has come. To have a school that's been playing football for 100 years celebrating like that after beating one that's been around for only about 10 - how crazy does that sound? I guess things have come full circle. We're used to celebrating the upsets.
This was a really good learning experience, though. When you're winning, you don't have every single mistake you made dissected. But when you're on the other end, all the mistakes are amplified. We definitely learned a lot about ourselves and about expectations.
