Three-Star McMillian Commits To VT

It took a trip out west and consulting with all his options on how he would be used at each school, but Hylton (Va.) three-star athlete Travon McMillian has come to a decision.

At an announcement at his school this afternoon, McMillian committed to Virginia Tech. He chose the Hokies out of a final three that also included Georgia Tech and California.

For McMillian, Rivals.com's No. 33 athlete in the class of 2014, it came down to a combination of academics, the program and just as importantly, relationships and honesty.

"They have a pretty good engineering program, 24th in the country," McMillian said. "That's important to me. Also, from the football standpoint, the entire coaching staff knew my name, knew me by my first name. I talked to Bud Foster and he said they're giving me a shot at quarterback. If that doesn't work out, he said I'm too dynamic of an athlete just to be on the bench. That was good to hear, but knowing I can go to Tech and get on the field and get a pretty good engineering degree is a really good option for me."

McMillian has long said he wanted to play quarterback, though being six-foot tall, few schools would commit to that position. Virginia Tech has promised McMillian the chance to compete there, though he said the Hokies have also talked about using him at receiver, cornerback, safety and even WHIP linebacker.

But throughout the process, McMillian said Foster, who was his primary recruiter, was always up front with how Virginia Tech viewed him.

"It's our relationship," McMillian said. "He's a cool guy to talk to and I joke around with him, he jokes around with me. He's like a father figure, down to earth and he doesn't lie to you about anything. Anything he says, he tells you the truth about and that's what I like most about him. Some coaches will tell you something just to get you there. You have to look out for those kinds of guys."

According to McMillian, the right guys were at Virginia Tech. But though McMillian has made a decision, he's not quite sure it's a final one. Still, he admits it will take a lot to sway him from the Hokies.

"I feel pretty sure about my decision," McMillian said. "I'm still gonna be in touch with Georgia Tech and Cal, but I feel pretty sure about my decision right now. I might go to Georgia Tech, I'm not sure, only because I haven't gone down there before. I just wanna check it out a little bit, but right now I feel pretty sure about Virginia Tech."
