CLEMSON -- Clemson, ranked as high as #13 in the nation, scored all 11 of its runs in its final four innings at the plate to defeat #19 Georgia Tech 11-3 in the first game of a doubleheader at Doug Kingsmore Stadium on Friday afternoon.

The Tigers, who took a 1-0 series lead, improved to 29-13 overall and 14-8 in the ACC. The Yellow Jackets fell to 27-15 overall and 11-11 in ACC play.

Daniel Gossett (7-2), the first of three Tiger pitchers, earned the win. In 7.0 innings pitched, he allowed five hits, one run, and two walks with four strikeouts.

Georgia Tech starter Buck Farmer (7-3) suffered the loss, as he yielded nine hits, eight runs (four earned), and five walks with four strikeouts in 6.1 innings pitched.

In the fifth inning, Tyler Krieger led off with an eight-pitch walk. Jon McGibbon hit a grounder to second for a potential double play, but Matt Gonzalez's throw to second was errant, allowing the runners to move to second and third. Two batters later, Tyler Slaton grounded out to second to score Krieger, then Steve Wilkerson hit a two-out double to score McGibbon.

The Tigers added a run in the sixth inning. Joe Costigan flared a one-out single to left and Tyler Krieger reached on a bunt single. McGibbon followed with a single up the middle to score pinch-runner Maleeke Gibson and give Clemson a 3-0 lead.

Zane Evans led off the top of the seventh inning with a double to left-center on a 1-2 pitch. Two batters later, Sam Dove lined a one-out double down the right-field line to score Evans, then A.J. Murray grounded a 1-2 pitch through the right side for a single to advance Dove to third. But Mott Hyde struck out and Daniel Spingola grounded out to keep the Tigers ahead 3-1.

Clemson responded with five runs in the bottom of the seventh inning. Wilkerson lined a one-out single to center and Steven Duggar grounded a single through the right side. Garrett Boulware followed with a double down the left-field line to score Wilkerson. After Jay Baum was intentionally walked to load the bases, Gibson reached on an error by Murray at first that allowed Duggar to score, then Krieger walked on four pitches to score Boulware. McGibbon walked on four pitches to score Baum, then Thomas Brittle reached on a fielder's choice that plated Gibson.

Duggar led off the eighth inning with a walk and pinch-hitter Kevin Bradley flared a single to right-center. Baum followed with a sacrifice fly to right field to score Duggar. After Gibson singled through the right side, Krieger laced a single through the left side to score Bradley. McGibbon then lined a single to left-center to score Gibson.

Gonzalez led off the ninth inning with a double down the left-field line and scored on an error on a run-down play after Dove's grounder to the mound. Murray followed with a single through the right side to score Dove.

Krieger led Clemson's 13-hit attack by going 3-for-3 with two RBIs and two walks. McGibbon went 2-for-3 with three RBIs and two walks, while Wilkerson and Duggar added two hits apiece.

Dove and Murray had two hits apiece to pace the Yellow Jackets, who had eight hits in the contest.

Clemson and Georgia Tech will play game-two of the three-game series and game-two of the doubleheader on Friday at 7:00 PM. The game will be televised by CSS. Game three will now be played Saturday at 11 a.m. due to the threat of inclement weather.
