CLEMSON -- Clemson running back Andre Ellington became the program's fourth player taken in the 2013 NFL Draft Saturday. The Arizona Cardinals selected Ellington in the sixth round as the 187th pick of the draft.
Ellington becomes the 219th player in Clemson history to be drafted to the NFL and 23rd over the last four years. Eight of those 23 selections for the Tigers have been top 100 picks.
The three-year starter at tailback for the Tigers wrapped up his second back-to-back 1,000-yard rushing season in 2012, helping his team to an 11-2 finish and a win over LSU in the Chick-fil-A Bowl. Ellington's 2012 contribution came in the form of 1,081 yards (5.1 AVG) and eight scores.
The Moncks Corner native, who attended Berkeley High School, finished his Clemson career fourth all-time in rushing yardage, trailing only Raymond Priester, James Davis and C.J. Spiller. Ellington red-shirted the 2008 season and spent 2009 in a rotation with both Spiller and Jamie Harper.
Ellington signed as a member of Tommy Bowden's final recruiting class in 2008 where he was rated fifth nationally among all-purpose backs, 172nd nationally overall regardless of position and fourth overall regardless of position in the Palmetto State.
Earlier in the day former Tiger strongside end Malliciah Goodman was taken in the fourth round by the Atlanta Falcons, followed by defensive back Jonathan Meeks to the Buffalo Bills in round five as the 143rd overall pick.
Clemson All-American wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins was taken by the Houston Texans in the first round of the draft Thursday evening. Hopkins announced his intentions to bypass his senior season and enter the draft early in January, as expected.
Tigerillustrated.com will have additional Clemson draft notes later this weekend.
