The familiarity was there. All Massaponax (Va.) defensive tackle Steve Sobczak wanted was more reassurance.
Sobczak, who had been committed to James Madison, got what he was looking for from Virginia Tech yesterday in the form of a full, regular offer. And Sobczak quickly made a new decision, to decommit from the Dukes and switch his commitment to the Hokies.
Sobczak will join his friend, three-star defensive end Vincent Mihota, with Virginia Tech. Sobczak's offer from the Hokies had initially been a grayshirt offer, but that changed yesterday and Sobczak jumped at the opportunity.
"It feels great to be a Hokie," Sobczak said. "I'm just excited to play next to my bro. I'll be there in August and I'm pretty excited to get there."
Sobczak last visited Virginia Tech for the Hokies' game against Duke last month. He also camped at the Hokies' July recruiting camp.
Sobczak committed during the summer to coach Mickey Matthews and James Madison. Matthews was relieved of his coaching duties yesterday after 15 years, but Sobczak said that didn't have any bearing on his decision.
"I didn't even know he got fired until I got interviewed last night," Sobczak said.
Sobczak, a 6'2" 285-pound defensive tackle, has had 59 tackles and a pair of sacks this season for Massaponax, which is still undefeated on the season at 12-0. The Panthers host North Stafford (Va.) Friday in the VHSL Class 5A state quarterfinals.
