South Carolina's football staff received help at a key position tonight when Marietta (Ga.) Walton four-star defensive back D.J. Smith made his verbal commitment to the Gamecocks.
The 6-foot, 191-pounder announced his pledge on "The New College Football Show" on FoxSportsCarolinas.
The Peach State product is a member of the 2014 Rivals250 and is ranked by Rivals.com as the seventh-best cornerback prospect in the country.
During the recruiting process, Smith drew offers from Arkansas, Clemson, Florida, Georgia, Michigan State, Ole Miss, Nebraska, Tennessee and many others.
Smith was recruited by Gamecock assistant coach G.A. Mangus. His official visit to Columbia is set for this weekend.
"He's been a good recruiter. He is my favorite one," Smith said of Mangus back in December. "He just keeps it real with me."
"They're losing a lot of players," Smith recently told Rivals.com. They're losing like two in the draft and one off a knee injury, so I can come in and play early."
Smith also credited secondary coach Grady Brown as a key factor in his decision, along with early playing time and proximity to home.
"I feel like it's the best fit location-wise. Coach Brown, he's been like a second dad," Smith said on FoxSportsCarolinas during his announcement. "He's been there for me. He's been truthful and straightforward with me from the get go. I feel like it's the best chance for me to get early paying time."
