THE WEST ZONE message board | SHOP NOW: DEALS on CLEMSON apparel

Is there a more overblown rivalry-related phrase than "throw the records out the window?"

If you've been around the Palmetto Bowl a long time, how many truly crazy things have you seen in this game? How many times has the significant underdog risen up and knocked off the favorite?

Uh, not many.

Almost all the time, the team that wins this game wins it because it's the better team.

Off the top of our head, there have been maybe a few exceptions.

Tommy Bowden continued Clemson's tradition of dominating rival South Carolina, owning a 7-2 record versus the Gamecocks spanning coaching tenures of Lou Holtz and Steve Spurrier.

In 2013, Clemson outplayed South Carolina in Columbia but lost by double digits thanks to six turnovers.

In 2000, you could've made a case that the Gamecocks were the better team but they lost because they let Rod Gardner get behind them on a Hail Mary that set up the game-winning field goal.

But overall, the history of this rivalry has been no mystery. Much more often than not, the winner of the game has been the better team. And more often than not, that team has been Clemson.
