Georgia defensive tackle commits to Clemson

Clemson has picked up a huge verbal commitment in Newton (Ga.) Covington defensive tackle Darnell Jefferies.
Jefferies, who will be in Clemson this week for the second session of the Dabo Swinney Camp, declared for the Tigers via a social media account Monday evening. He had been a longtime Tiger lean. In fact Clemson's staff had felt this one was done for the last several months.
Said Jefferies: I am excited and relieved to announce that I am fully committed to Clemson University."
Jefferies, who was expected to commit this week while in Clemson, turned off his phone and went on a family beach vacation this past weekend before letting the cat out of the bag Monday evening.
The 6-4, 275-pound tackle is rated 55th nationally at his position by Rivals.com and becomes Clemson’s second take in a class that is imperative for the Tigers to replenish the cupboard along the interior line.
Jefferies also considered offers from Alabama, Georgia, Auburn, Tennessee and Florida, among a dozen other programs.
The lineman represents the 10th pledge for the Tigers' 2018 recruiting class, joining headliner (QB) Trevor Lawrence of Cartersville, Ga., a five-star and the No. 1 football-recruit in the nation and (DL) Xavier Thomas, also a five-star and the nation's No. 1-rated strongside end prospect out of Bradenton (Fla.) IMG Academy.
Other out-of-state commits for the Tigers include four-star linebacker Mike Jones Jr. of Bradenton (Fla.) IMG Academy and four-star end Justin Mascoll of Snellville (Ga.).
In-state Clemson pledges include four-star receiver Derion Kendrick of Rock Hill - South Pointe, highly regarded defensive tackle Josh Belk of Richburg - Lewisville, tight end Braden Galloway of Seneca, linebacker Jake Venables of Central - D.W. Daniel and kicker/punter B.T. Potter of Rock Hill - South Pointe.
