1. The Dabo Swinney Camp is in the books, and it pretty much met expectation.
The event checked the boxes of just about every line item we presented in recent weeks.
*** Clemson has steered away from using it as the clinching moment to commitments.
Having tallied just two pledges the previous three camps, the Tigers again nabbed only a single – and a kicker at that in Rock Hill (S.C.) South Pointe’s B.T. Potter.
*** The overall talent level would seem down because of so few vacancies left this class combined with the new NCAA rule that essentially ends high school coaches working camps and bringing their prospects with them.
Honestly, the first week of the camp might have had more evaluation value for the FCS and Division II college coaches who filled the counselor jobs.
*** But when you factored in the stars who would visit campus in a little more than a two-week stretch, the cast has been robust.
By our count, Clemson played host to two uncommitted five-stars over the next two classes along with five four-stars this class and 10 next cycle. That’s not even getting to the handful who project to be four-stars once Rivals.com expands its rated juniors beyond a top-100 list.
2. The marquee attraction for the camp turned out to be Atlanta (Ga.) Pace Academy five-star lineman Jamaree Salyer.
Salyer (6-4, 340), ranked No. 9 nationally by Rivals.com, arrived around lunch time Tuesday and spent the afternoon on campus before competing at the rain-shortened evening workout. He made the trip with a high school assistant coach.
A year ago, we expressed that Salyer had produced the most impressive performances by an interior offensive line prospect on the spring recruiting camp circuit that we had witnessed in quite some time.
Our information indicates that held to form through Tuesday night’s one-on-ones, with Salyer reaffirming to observers why he’s atop Clemson’s board.
There are four schools publicly considered contenders: Georgia, Clemson, Ohio State and Stanford. Salyer visited Notre Dame this past weekend.
In talking with multiple contacts on various sides of this recruitment, sentiment unanimously holds that this is a battle between Clemson and Georgia.
