Monday Insider

THE WEST ZONE message board | SHOP NOW: DEALS on CLEMSON apparel

1. Clemson’s signature summer recruiting event is less than three weeks away, and as we outlined a week ago, the Tigers have a track record recently with a splash addition before summer’s end.

For what was justifiably pegged to be a smaller class, it bears noting the Tigers entered July ranked No. 10 in the Rivals.com recruiting class rankings – and did so with fewer commitments than anyone above them.

The month kicked off with the final days of The Opening in Oregon, an event that has grown into the most cherished all-star invite by prospects.

Clemson used The Opening last year for its biggest summer fireworks when five-star receiver Tee Higgins announced his commitment to the Tigers over Tennessee, Ohio State, Alabama and a few others.

They got some good publicity from it nationally. But The Opening lost some of its luster as an announcement destination this year because it was no longer televised by ESPN without the event’s shoe sponsor essentially footing the bill.

So what’s next?

The July 21 “All-In Cookout” might boast its most impressive gathering of uncommitted talent yet for an event designed to be intimate and select.

And it might provide the answer to who’s next as well.

2. Atlanta (Ga.) Carver four-star safety Quindarious Monday announced a top seven Saturday night featuring Clemson, Auburn, Florida, Florida State, Georgia, Georgia Tech and Tennessee.

We’ve trumpeted Monday (6-3, 175) for a couple of months now, and his performance at the Dabo Swinney Camp last month may well have been all Clemson’s coaches needed to see as well.

Monday plans to travel to Florida and Auburn next week before getting back to Clemson for the Cookout.

That’s the last stop on his calendar.

We have indicated that Monday would likely have a decision by the end of the summer, and that remains the case. There are people familiar with his recruitment who expect it to come to a head shortly after the Cookout.

Let the record show we have previously drawn parallels to Clemson’s chase last year for five-star defensive back A.J. Terrell.

Terrell made his first Clemson visit in early June, brought family back again for the Cookout and declared a month later.

The Tigers’ last three defensive back commitments have come from the Atlanta area.

Gamblers say you shouldn’t bet against a streak.
