THE WEST ZONE message board | SHOP NOW: DEALS on CLEMSON apparel

1. On Saturday Clemson kicked off its stretch of three home games in its final four contests – a recruiting luxury considering the momentum a college football playoff chase figures to have in its appeal to prospects.

There might be less than a handful of recruits strongly in Clemson’s conversation to cap its 2017 class. And one of them headlined the Syracuse visitor list.

Forsyth (Ga.) Mary Persons four-star defensive end Malik Herring made his first appearance on campus since spending a day at the Dabo Swinney Camp in June.

Herring (6-3, 255), ranked No. 75 nationally by Rivals.com, posted on social media Friday that it would be a “huge weekend” for him, intimating the visit could impact his impending college decision.

Indicators have strongly pointed toward Georgia for an extended time. Yet there has always remained the undercurrent that if one team could pull him off the Bulldogs, it would be Clemson. He holds a favorable rapport with defensive ends coach Marion Hobby, and there has been reason to believe influential family members want him to give the Tigers ample consideration.

We found it eye-raising that Clemson's staff dropped its defensive ends behind the line of scrimmage as veritable linebackers – occasionally even lined up wide against the slot receivers – the day Herring was in on hand. Not saying defensive coordinator Brent Venables employed such a profound adjustment in an attempt to appeal to one recruit. But given the Bulldogs are selling him on playing edge linebacker, it merits mentioning.
