Belmont (N.C.) South Point safety/linebacker Tanner Muse identified Clemson as his favorite at the beginning of the recruiting process.
The Tigers emerged at what could be the end, as the 2015 prospect committed to Clemson on Sunday evening.
"It was my relationship with the coaches and the atmosphere there that made them stand out from the others," Muse said.
Muse (6-4, 205) held additional offers from North Carolina, N.C. State, Michigan, Virginia, Vanderbilt, Ole Miss, Georgia Tech and Duke. Notre Dame intimated an offer could be on the way if he visited.
UNC, though, presented Clemson's strongest competition. But then Muse and his girlfriend returned to Death Valley for the third time this season as unofficial visitors for Clemson's home finale against The Citadel, and momentum was firmly in the Tigers' favor.
"I started thinking about committing Wednesday of last week, and I reached a point where I decided I should just go ahead and finish it up," Muse said.
Muse informed his area recruiter, defensive tackles coach Dan Brooks.
"I was going to call coach (Dabo) Swinney, but I was not able to get in contact with him because of the (Orange Bowl) call," he said. "So I'm probably going to wait and get up with him (Monday)."
Many project Muse to wind up at outside linebacker, but he said Clemson is pursuing him at safety.
As a junior, he collected 87 tackles, 15 pass break-ups and four interceptions.
Muse becomes the Tigers' fourth verbal commit of the 2015 recruiting class, joining four-star athlete Shadell Bell of Decatur (Ga.), defensive back Van Smith of Charlotte (NC) and offensive lineman Noah Green of Boiling Springs.
