PAUL STRELOW: Justin Falcinelli will enter the offensive line rotation.
In a perfect world, teams want to have a second platoon of linemen they trust to use in significant game action. Usually if they’re lucky, they have eight who actually meet the standard.
Mitch Hyatt and Jake Fruhmorgen are fixtures at the starting tackle spots, as is Jay Guillermo at center. Taylor Hearn is the glue guy who can play either tackle or guard, while Tyrone Crowder and Maverick Morris have established values at guard.
Falcinelli is listed as the second-string center, which doesn’t tend to get a bunch of run for snap continuity purposes.
But we were rather impressed with Falcinelli in the spring, and if you have an offensive linemen capable of performing at a high level, typically coaches find a way to get him in the rotation.
Offensive line coach Robbie Caldwell indicated Falcinelli will cross-train at guard again this fall, and we’re inclined to bet he works his way into the equation. Should Hearn have to slide to tackle, he would give the Tigers a third option at guard.
