THE WEST ZONE message board | SHOP NOW: DEALS on CLEMSON apparel
1. In light of Clemson’s reasonable chances of nabbing consecutive five-star quarterbacks, we thought it would be interesting to dig up some historical context.
The Tigers own a commitment from Brownsburg (Ind.) 2017 five-star Hunter Johnson and are battling with Georgia for Cartersville (Ga.) 2018 five-star Trevor Lawrence, who could decide as early as this summer.
In the last decade, a program has scored back-to-back five-star passers – as ranked by Rivals.com -- only twice.
In 2007, Florida followed Tim Tebow (No. 22 overall in ’06) with Cam Newton (No. 28).
The next year, Notre Dame piggybacked Jimmy Clausen (No. 1 in ’07) with Dayne Crist (No. 25).
Johnson ranks No. 4 nationally, while Lawrence is in the conversation for the top overall spot when Rivals.com unveils an ordered 2018 listing.
To illustrate the long odds of going back-to-back, there haven’t been more than two five-star quarterbacks in a cycle since 2009.
Of course, Clemson’s stretch of quarterback recruiting is made more impressive when expanding the framework by adding in 2017 four-star commitment Chase Brice (No. 172) to go with 2016 four-star signee Zerrick Cooper (No. 230).
Stanford has yielded a run of four straight years with a quarterback ranked No. 108 or higher, punctuated by high-four star Davis Mills (No. 28) as a ’17 commitment.
Florida paired John Brantley (No. 47) with Newton in the 2007 class, giving it three top-50s in a two-year span.
Texas A&M had its infamous span of three within the top 137 prospects in as many years – all of whom transferred before their eligibility expired.
It just goes to reinforce that you can’t predict how circumstances will unfold no matter how many highly billed prospects a team accrues.
