VIDEO: Townsend picks Clemson
SAN ANTONIO, Texas -- Saturday afternoon Clemson's top 10-rated recruiting class received another big boost, as four-star prospect Lateek Townsend announced his intentions to play for the Tigers in conjunction with the US Army All-American game.
Townsend becomes the second linebacker commit for the Tigers in the 2011 class, joining fellow Pee Dee area pledge B.J. Goodson of Lamar, who committed to Clemson in October.
Townsend is rated by Rivals.com as the No. 8 outside linebacker prospect in the nation and 172nd nationally overall regardless of position.
The Bulldog defender was one of the Palmetto State's most productive defensive players in each of the last three years, registering 191 tackles and 36 tackles for loss in 2008. As a junior Townsend hauled in 189 stops and 36 tackles for loss.
Townsend becomes the ninth prospect with at least a four-star rating to pick Clemson in the 2010-2011 recruiting cycle. He's also the 13th South Carolina native to join the Tigers' 2011 recruiting class.
The national prospect is tentatively slated to officially visit Clemson on January 14.
Townsend chose the Tigers over 20+ scholarship offers, including full rides from Tennessee, Florida, Alabama, USC, LSU, Miami, Nebraska, Notre Dame, Georgia, Auburn, Virginia Tech, Texas A&M, Arkansas and South Carolina. His Clemson recruiter is defensive coordinator Kevin Steele.
Towsend is expected to contend for immediate and possibly substantial playing time with the Tigers.
As of 7:00 p.m. EST Saturday, Clemson's recruiting class was ranked 9th in the country by Rivals.com.
