THE WEST ZONE message board | SHOP NOW: DEALS on CLEMSON apparel
-- The early chop blocks on Dexter Lawrence should be infuriating.
Earlier today in THIS THREAD on the West Zone message board we posted video clips that showed Georgia Tech going after Lawrence's legs on the second and third plays of the game.
Lawrence was already engaged with a blocker, and another lineman dived at his legs.
No penalty was called in either case.
Undoubtedly, Georgia Tech's staff knew Lawrence had been dealing with a sore foot all season after undergoing offseason surgery to insert a screw into his toe. This isn't all that out of the ordinary for the Jackets, who cut block all the time. But to see chop blocks on back-to-back plays this early is not a good look.
When you see these clips, honestly you're surprised Swinney didn't make more of an issue with them publicly. He and Paul Johnson are tight and all, and offensive line coach Ron West is a Clemson grad who was on the same staff with Swinney from 2003 to 2008, but this has to raise the blood pressure of everyone in Clemson's football program.
Put yourself in the shoes of Lawrence and his family. You have a livelihood riding on those feet and those legs. You've already been dealing with an injury that basically leaves you playing with one foot.
And now, engaged with a blocker, you go back-to-back plays with a very large human diving at your legs.
It has to be infuriating. And scary.
It's just not right. If the refs aren't going to call them on it during the game, someone needs to call them on it after the game.
