Vital recruiting stretch for Clemson, Brownell

When Clemson formalized the decision Monday to retain Brad Brownell, it made a decision that stands to impact its basketball program for the long term.

Regardless of how next season shakes out, the recruiting class forged this summer projects to have substantial bearing on the Tigers’ future.

Clemson's coaches will hit the road next month armed with at least three available scholarships for the 2018-19 haul.

Donte Grantham, Gabe DeVoe and Legend Robertin will all come off the books by the end of next season, and time will tell if attrition opens any more spots.

Clemson's staff brought in four newcomers this past season, albeit three as transfers. That much turnover stands to have a significant bearing on a 13-man roster despite the increased nomadic nature of college basketball players.

Technically the program’s last four-member signing class came in 2013-14, and one could argue that the shortcomings of that group – which included Austin Ajukwa, Patrick Rooks and Ibrahim Djambo – contributed substantially to Clemson’s talent shortfall in subsequent years.

Moreover, this next signing class will be arriving with the Tigers set to lose five more players by the end of their freshman seasons; Shelton Mitchell, Marcquise Reed, Elijah Thomas, Ty Hudson and David Skara all have two years of eligibility remaining.
