Jacksonville, Fla. has been good this year for Clemson. The Tigers have three verbal commits from Florida's largest city – Xavier Brewer, Matt Skinner and Kyle Parker - and are in the hunt for the top running back recruit out of the Sunshine State – Jamie Harper - who also hails from that town.
They also have a glaring need for safety depth. So the Tigers dipped into the friendly grounds, offering a defensive back – Daniel Andrews - that has distinct ties to the Clemson region and the current recruiting class.
"(Wide receivers) coach (Dabo) Swinney offered last Friday," Andrews told Tigerillustrated.com on Tuesday night. "I was excited, very excited. I know a lot of people in town now that are going to Clemson. I haven't been there yet, but I've heard some really nice things. My coaches were excited about the offer as were my teammates, and my parents were real proud."
The 6-foot, 192-pound Jacksonville (FL) Trinity Christian product has known the future Tiger quarterback, who he went to middle school with, for a while and is teammates with the four-star running back.
All five Jacksonville natives plan to make unofficial visits to Clemson this weekend.
"We are all rolling up there Friday night," the safety detailed. "My parents have a house up there about 30 minutes from Clemson so we are all staying there."
Florida, Miami and South Carolina are also showing interest in the senior and he shared his thoughts on those programs.
Florida – "Every time I've been there it's been like a family, not a team. The team really gets along well with the coaches."
South Carolina – "I used to talk to them a lot, but I haven't for some time. They've slowed down. They have a couple of guys ahead of me on the depth chart."
Miami – "I haven't been down to Miami yet. I've talked to the coaches and they really like me. They offered tonight. That was huge... to get an offer from a program like that. They've always had a great program. I'm pretty excited about them offering."
So with the Tigers the first team to offer, are they out in front?
"They are my favorite and leader," he admitted.
Could the talented senior be a packaged deal with his prized teammate?
"That's a very likely possibility," the standout said. "All of the schools recruiting us really see that."
Andrews has recorded over 80 tackles and picked off a pair of passes this season. As a junior he racked up 88 tackles, had two interceptions and recovered two fumbles.
The Trinity Christian star indicated that he runs the 40-yard dash in 4.5 seconds, bench presses 305 pounds, squats 405, vertically leaps 39-inches and holds a 2.7 GPA.
