AUBURN | Fall camp is over and Auburn still doesn’t have a starting quarterback for the opener against Clemson Sept. 3.

Gus Malzahn said he needs that “100 percent feel” before he’s ready to name a starter between Sean White, John Franklin III and Jeremy Johnson.

“I'm not ready to name a starter right now. Possibly in the near future that could happen but we're not ready right now as of the end of fall camp,” Malzahn said. “That's not a bad thing at all. As a matter of fact, it's a real positive thing that we've got a fierce competition going on. Our guys are battling. They're much improved from the spring, and that's exciting for me.”

The race could be narrowed from three to two shortly, however. “That's definitely the plan,” Malzahn said.

Malzahn would also prefer to have one clear starter this season and not a revolving door at the position like last season when Johnson started the first three games, White the next five, Johnson the next four and then White in the Birmingham Bowl.

“We're hoping to have the guy,” Malzahn said.

And Malzahn wants more production from that guy on the ground. Auburn’s quarterbacks combined for 172 rushing yards last season, which includes Johnson’s 65-yard touchdown run at LSU.

“Our quarterback has to be more of a runner this year, we’ve talked about that, I don’t care who it is,” Malzahn said.

Auburn wrapped up fall camp with a practice Monday morning. The players will have off Tuesday for the start of fall semester and then return to the practice fields Wednesday where the beginnings of the game plan for Clemson will begin to take shape.

“It's kind of getting to the point now we're starting to narrow some things down,” Malzahn said. “We rotated. We gave everybody a chance in the 105 to show what they can during in fall camp. Now as coaches you kind of catch your breath and get your personnel a little more defined once you start game planning for your first opponent. We will do that.”
