THE WEST ZONE message board | SHOP NOW: DEALS on CLEMSON apparel

1. With little more than two months left until the December signing period, Clemson remains No. 1 in the Rivals.com team rankings.

The Tigers have 2,900 points, notably ahead of No. 2 LSU (2,791), No. 3 Alabama (2,726), No. 4 Ohio State (2,600) and No. 6 Georgia (2,329). We’re omitting No. 5 Texas (2,463) from this discussion because we don’t believe the Longhorns can get in range to contend for the top spot.

A team’s 20 highest-rated signees count toward the ranking, and all but UGA (16 commitments) have reached that volume. Which is to simply point out that any further commitments don’t necessarily count toward the point total; if anything, they displace a lower-rated one in most cases.

For example, Clemson’s 20th prospect who counts toward the ranking is a 5.4 two-star. The next commitment figures to bring a higher point total to the table. Then there’s one 5.6 three-star and a 5.7 high-three star.

The Tigers have a five-star linebacker and a five-star defensive end in the crosshairs, and odds are they land one of their two four-star receiver targets. So their point total projects to eclipse the 3,000-plateau, although we’ll see if those two three-stars – tight end Sage Ennis and receiver Ajou Ajou – get bumped to four-star stature in the long run, based on both having superlative senior seasons.
