Sapp commits to Clemson

Clemson has landed the nation's No. 2 rated weakside defensive end in Bamberg-Ehrhardt star Ricky Sapp. Tigerillustrated.com rates the 6-foot-4 1/2, 225-pounder as the No. 2 prospect in the state of South Carolina overall regardless of position.
Sapp, who has more than three-dozen offers, committed to his Clemson recruiter, outside linebackers coach Ron West, while on campus today. It was the third unofficial visit to Clemson of the spring for the Bamberg-Ehrhardt star. Sapp initially visited back on March 12th for Junior Day, following up that trip with an appearance at Clemson's spring game on April 16th.
Tigerillustrated.com had been forecasting the blue-chip lineman to Clemson for the last several weeks.
Sapp's pledge, as first reported by Tigerillustrated.com, becomes the fourth for Clemson this spring.
Monday afternoon both Sapp and Bamberg-Ehrhardt head football coach Ron Duncan confirmed that today's unofficial visit would take place.
Sapp was accompanied to Clemson earlier today by Bamberg-Ehrhardt assistant coach Gene Williams.
Last season the All-American lineman totaled 70 tackles, 27 tackles for loss and 11 sacks en route to earning all-state honors.
Sapp is a member of the Rivals.com Top 100, billed as the nation's 42nd best prospect.
Sapp issues statement to Rivals.com on commitment:
"I have known in my heart for a long time that Clemson is where I've wanted to go. I have been leaning to Clemson ever since coach (Ron) West started recruiting Matt Raysor two years ago. I've just known for a long time that Clemson would be the place for me."
"At this time, I felt the best thing for me, my family and my team, was to go ahead and make a verbal commitment. Now I can focus on my academics and my senior season, and not have recruiting hanging over me or my teammates."
"I am very flattered at the interest a lot of schools have shown me in the recruiting process. I am very thankful and blessed to have had so many opportunities. But it was time to put this behind me, and Clemson was where I wanted to be."

"I plan on becoming the best that I can be at Clemson. I will be a team player, and I will be a part of something special. I want to do whatever it takes, through hard work, to help us win a national championship."
