Moe Joe Coffee Shop, 385 Old Greenville Highway, Clemson, SC
(near the intersection of Highway 123 and Highway 93/Old Greenville Highway)
Gourmet Coffee -- Live Entertainment -- Beer & Wine -- Southern Style
Locally owned and operated by Tigers football alum Alex Dial (Clemson 89-93) since 2003, Moe Joe Coffee Shop is conveniently located on Highway 93 in Clemson. But listen up, Tiger Fans! This new location for the long-time coffee house offers so much more than a cup of joe (or a latte, or smoothies, or breakfast muffins).
Open until 10 p.m. all week long, Clemson Moe Joe's has a running calendar of live entertainment events that are a welcome alternative to downtown Clemson's familiar night scene. Acoustic musical performances, wine tastings, and more are scheduled throughout the week and most weekends and are worth checking out. A well-edited selection of beer (IPA, lagers, and more) and wine (white, red, and sparkling) makes this a great place to lounge, visit with friends, and enjoy live entertainment. Drinks and music pair perfectly with Moe Joe's original sandwiches or their evening appetizer menu, which includes a variety of homemade appetizers including hummus, bean dip, salsa and fruit & cheese plates.
(Check out their Facebook Page for updated event listings.)
Not only can you feel good about supporting a local business, but Moe Joe's is eco-friendly, too. All coffee is Fair Trade and Rainforest Friendly Grown. Fresh fruit smoothies, stash teas, chai tea drinks, and specialty drinks (named for their most regular customers) are all a part of their extensive menu. Make this your go-to coffee shop. You'll be glad you did!

Larry's Rec: "This is so much more than a coffee shop. We live at Moe Joe's all year long. My wife and I often meet friends here with the kids on Saturday mornings. The grownups enjoy some great coffee and the casual atmosphere, while the kids dig into oversized muffins and listen to a children's music performer strum the guitar. Then on Friday and Saturday nights, it's a great place to stop in for a few drinks (the beer and wine lists offer a great selection!), a snack (lots of house-made items on the evening appetizer menu) and to listen to live music -- from bluegrass and folk to cover bands and original acoustical performances. And Alex, the owner, has never met a stranger."

Larry's Rec: "Don't miss the filet mignon or any of John's pork dishes--cooked to perfection every time. His nightly specials are can't-miss, and highlight whatever's growing fresh in his garden or his neighbors' gardens. The house-made pastas, breads, salad dressings, desserts, and more have spoiled my family. We compare every other Italian meal we eat to Villa Novella, and everything else comes in a distant second. We eat here weekly!"

4:30-10 p.m. Thursday-Saturday
Phone: (864) 653-3354

Larry's Rec: "When we can't decide what we want to eat tonight, the Blue Heron is the answer. Their extensive menu offers everything and then some ... steaks, seafood, pasta, burgers, salads, and more, all blend with a variety Southern-infused entrees and nightly specials. The sushi menu and sushi specials are a great option when we're in the mood for something a little lighter. They even have a variety of seating options! When we're in the mood for a fine-dining atmosphere, we sit in the upstairs eating area. And the downstairs bar seating is a great place to gather with other families. Blue Heron owners (and brothers) Tim and Shaun Chastain hail from Clemson, and are active members of the community. "

Spanky's Backyard BBQ -- Six Mile, SC
Family-style restaurant
If you haven't been to Spanky's yet, you don't know what you're missing! Since opening its doors, this barbecue joint has become one of the most popular spots in the quiet town of Six Mile and beyond. Located on Main St. in this small, Pickens County town -- JUST A 10-MINUTE DRIVE FROM CLEMSON -- Spanky's fully smokes its ribs, chicken, beef and pork on the premises. They don't drown their meat in sauces; instead, they let the customers take their pick of a diverse mix of five homemade sauces, INCLUDING THEIR SIGNATURE BOURBON SAUCE. And it tastes even better with a cold beer, also now being served at Spanky's. Spanky's is equipped to cater special events and parties of all sizes. Use them for your tailgate party or for any other occasion.
Reservations available, walk-ins welcomed.

Larry's Rec: "You can smell the smokey, delicious barbecue served up at Spanky's before you can even see the jam-packed parking lot that fronts the main drag into sleepy Six Mile. Spanky's lean meats -- chicken, beef, and pork -- are all smoked on-site and served up with a fantastic array of sauces, some sweet, some spicy, all delicious. The baked beans, macaroni and cheese, and homemade banana pudding round out most of my meals at Spanky's. It's worth the short drive to Six Mile to check out everything Spanky's owners Bill and Lisa Edmondson have going on.
