The Clemson Tigers are well on their way to inking a third consecutive top five recruiting class, an effort reinforced Monday when Roswell (Ga.) DB LeAnthony Williams pledged to the Tigers. Tigerillustrated.com first projected Williams to Clemson back on January 26.

The 6-foot, 175-pound corner, a four-star, moved up to 87th nationally overall regardless of position Monday in the latest Rivals100 release. Williams, billed as one of the nation's top 10 recruits at his position, also is rated 15th overall regardless of position in the state of Georgia.

Williams, who attended the Tigers' first Junior Day of the 2016 calendar year several weeks ago, picked Clemson over offers from Alabama, Auburn, Florida, Georgia, LSU, Michigan, Notre Dame, Tennessee and Miami among numerous others.

Ole Miss tendered an offer last week following a trip to Notre Dame. But Williams, a friend and former teammate of current Clemson five-star midyear enrollee (LB) Tre Lamar, had been leaning to the Tigers for months.

Williams is the first of what could be as many as three cornerback takes in Clemson's 2017 recruiting class. He also marks the fifth junior commitment for the Tigers with at least a four-star rating, joining five-star QB and class headliner Hunter Johnson of Brownsburg (Ind.), four-star (OL) Matt Bockhorst of Cincinnati (OH) St. Xavier, four-star (QB) Chase Brice of Loganville (Ga.) Grayson and four-star (WR) Amari Rodgers of Knoxville (Tenn.) Catholic.

The Tigers also have pledges from highly regarded (OL) Noah DeHond of Hightstown (NJ) and (OL) Blake Vinson of Citra (Fla), as well as legacy (DB/LB) Baylon Spector of Calhoun (Ga).

Should Clemson close with a top five recruiting class for the third consecutive year next February, it will mark the first time that has happened in program history. Earlier this month Clemson signed the nation's No. 5 recruiting class after finishing No. 4 nationally in 2015. It marked just the second time Clemson had accomplished that feat in recruiting since the 1988, 1989 classes, the final two signing classes under then head coach Danny Ford.
